The Need for FR Protective ClothingWorkers in utilities, oil, gas, petrochemical, electrical maintenance, and steel industries work in environments that expose them to potential hazards that could cause severe or fatal burn injuries. A flash fire, momentary electric arc, or molten metal splash exposure will cause everyday non-flame resistant work clothes to ignite and will continue to burn even after the source of ignition has been removed. Common untreated natural fibers will continue to burn until the fabric is totally consumed. Non flame resistant synthetic fibers will burn with melting and dripping that will cause severe contact burns to the skin. Studies have concluded that the majority of severe and fatal burn injuries are due to the individual?s clothing igniting and continuing to burn, not by the exposure itself. Using flame resistant clothing will provide thermal protection at the exposure area and after the source of ignition is removed, the flame resistant garments will self extinguish and limit the body burn percentage.
